Victoria, BC Hosts British Museum Exhibit Premiere

Treasures: The World’s Cultures from the British Museum, will make its North American premiere at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria BC from May to September in 2009.   The exhibition will be a journey through the evolution of civilization and includes some of the most celebrated objects from the British Museum’s renowned collection – from the oldest-known artifacts made by human hands to monumental antiquities from ancient Greece and Rome to provocative contemporary art from around the world.

Whistler Peak-to-Peak Gondola on Track to Break Records

Construction of the new Peak 2 Peak Gondola between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains is well under way with two of the four towers already built.  The gondola which will link the two mountains will open in December 2008.   The world record-breaking gondola will be the highest and longest unsupported lift span in the world and will carry 2,050 people per hour each way with a ride time of approximately 11 minutes.

First Nations Cultural Centre Now Open in Whistler

The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, a world-class attraction showcasing the distinct cultures of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations, is now open.  Located in a spectacular natural setting, the centre offers highly flexible space, accommodating banquets for up to 280 people and receptions for 500.  Cantrav can incorporate authentic First Nations traditional food, drumming and singing for a truly unique experience.

Alaska Program Reaches New Heights

New Luxury Hotels For Vancouver

The new five-star Shangri-La Hotel which will occupy the first fifteen floors of a new 61-story landmark building, the tallest in Vancouver, is opening in January 2009.

Grouse Mountain in Vancouver now offers another new adventurous activity: mountain zip lining.  The Air Grouse experience puts riders high above the alpine rainforest, careening through the air at speeds of more than 50 km/hour.

Tourism Whistler to Celebrate Pangea Day

Tourism Whistler and the local community will help to support an international event aimed at uniting people from all over the world known as Pangea Day. This global celebration takes place May 10, 2008 and will be a platform to bridge the disconnects made my borders, conflicts and differences through the power of film.

Pangea Day will take place in such countries as Brazil, Egypt, India, Israel, Rwanda and the United States joining together through videoconferencing to produce a live four-hour program of 24 powerful films, inspirational music and visionary speakers. The short films have been submitted from people around the world since June 2007. Each deals with universal themes and was selected by a jury of top filmmakers.

In Whistler, the event will be celebrated at the TELUS Whistler Conference Centre and is supported by Tourism Whistler, Centerplate Catering, AVW-Telav and the Resort Municipality of Whistler.

The program will be broadcasted live in seven languages through the internet, television, digital cinemas and mobile phones, connecting millions of people from various socio-economic, cultural and religious backgrounds.
